Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is an excellent adsorption medium. It is used on air, gas and liquid streams.

Activated carbon adsorbs contaminating components such as pollutants, colourants or odours and poisonous substances from gas or liquid streams. Thanks to the activated carbon's large surface area, it is incredibly efficient.

How activated carbon works

Activated carbon is used for adsorption: capturing liquid or gaseous molecules on a solid surface. These molecules are strongly attracted to the surface of the activated carbon. Because carbon is a porous material, it can have an interior surface area of 1000 m2/gram. This surface is the result of the pores in the carbon. The contaminants become lodged in the pores and are held there until the carbon is washed out or swapped. This large surface area therefore makes carbon highly efficient.

Ecosystems Europe supplies various kinds of activated carbon, depending on the application you intend to use it for. Options include activated, impregnated, acid-washed, and catalytic. We would be glad to advise you on the right material for your process.

Activated carbon applications

Adsorption with activated carbon is often used for water treatment, gas treatment and odour control.

We can supply activated carbon in bulk, in adsorbers, and in rental installations. The latter are highly suited for temporary installations, for example soil sanitation projects.

Activated carbon is suitable for:

  • Air out processes
  • Gas treatment
  • Water contaminated with organic liquids
  • Inlet air
  • Flue gas
  • Odour problems

Important benefits

  • Highly efficient thanks to the large surface area
  • Simple disposal with reactivation (energy neutral)
  • Low investment
  • Can be used in many applications
